Chapter 4

Stranger Things

The Mainstreaming of Conspiracy Theory

I think the lay public is fully, fully unprepared for understanding this.

—KATHERINE O’BRIEN, director of the WHO’s

Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals program

It’s a hoax. There’s no pandemic. As Trump said, how many millions die of flu? If he’s sick, then they planted it when they tested him. It’s what they did to me when I went to hospital for my heart beating too fast. Two weeks later I got a cold. It’s political. I don’t trust the US government at all. Who are they to mandate personal safety? I listen to Trump.

—SEAN PATTERSON, Missouri truck driver, October 2020

To date, the origins of SARS‐CoV‐2 remain in doubt, and its behavior enigmatic: It has been reported that “the virus acts like no microbe humanity has ever seen.”

—KARL SIROTKIN and DAN SIROTKIN in a

BioEssays peer-reviewed paper

THE GRAND UNIFYING THEORY

I first encountered the grand unifying theory of the pandemic around a fire pit in a lovely garden on a lush June night in the Midwest. A retired government scientist, a friend of a friend, was holding court on the virus. His former job and his PhD gave him some credibility on the subject, and so we listened.

Covid, he believed, was not what we thought it was. He himself eschewed the mask. The virus wasn’t exactly a hoax; it was real. It was just that it was inevitable, and we were powerless against it. And dark human forces were behind it.

Humanity, he pointed out, at its apogee in terms of knowledge and technology, had exhausted the planet’s biological limit. Climate change, environmental degradation, the mass extinctions—they all pointed to a bad end.

There was nowhere to hide. No place to go but down.

Covid would kill a lot of us, he predicted.

Even with a vaccine?

He was silent for a bit. The firelight licked the darkness. The stars winked in the black firmament above; lightning bugs flickered in the woods. Our mask-less storyteller had our attention. He knew of what he spoke. Then he started dropping names.

Big names.

Bill Gates. Hillary Clinton. Elon Musk. George Soros. Trump too, sure. All in on it.

Wait, what? Drowsy eyebrows raised in unison. In on what?

Well, they all knew something that scientists like him understood pretty well, he said. In order for humanity to survive as a species, the human population would have to decrease by about 80 percent. We needed to get back down to a sustainable number of human beings or the earth was going to fry and turn into Venus. And—well—you must know the elites have a plan.

Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Hillary Clinton, George Soros, European billionaires, Davos people—yeah, maybe even Donald Trump—they had all come to an agreement about what needed to be done.

He wasn’t sure about the details of the strategy. Could have been just releasing the virus would be enough. Or maybe it would have something to do with the vaccines that Bill Gates would soon propagate around the world to fight it. Supposedly fight it. Maybe all of that, plus 5G tracking.
